November 2014 to January 2015 will be the first season block of curriculum for Yoga For Life. Our yoga practice will take on the general themes of de-stressing and detoxifying our bodies, our hearts, our lives. This comes at a critical time when the holiday season brings in a lot of contrived stresses and excesses. In the natural order of things, the winter season is a time of slowing down, quiet, and hibernation. The ultimate goal is to conserve our energy, consolidate, and survive, in preparation for the next cycle. Mankind has added more stress in calling for celebration and cheer at a naturally low time.
Our yoga practices — asana, pranayama, mediation, and others — will lead us into letting go the storms outside, eliminating the unnecessary, settling down and settling in, and connecting with the essentials. Our asanas will focus on twists: releasing tensions, purging toxins, making space and finding space. The Asana for the Season? Marichyasana B, a complex twist involving hips, spine and torso, shoulders and arms. Our goal for the season — regardless if we can achieve Marichyasana B or not — is that by embodying these asanas, our lives off of the mat improve.
